Allen herself gets into a flow when she plays the violin. Physically she is busy with her violin, mentally she shares music and the story behind that music. She also creates unity, because her music brings connection.

This is how I get into a flow
The video stimulated me to also consider how I get into a flow. I would like to share my experiences with you. I am also curious about what works for you, will you share it in the comments?

Sharing knowledge
I have discovered that I get into a flow when I can understand knowledge and share it with others. That can be done by writing an article about an insight I got from a video. But it also happens when I analyze data behind visitor numbers and share it with the Frankwatching team.

Physically, it works for me to shut myself off with my noise-cancelling headphones and familiar music. Preferably a whole series of songs from an artist or band that I know by heart. That way I am not distracted by changes in style or lyrics that I do not know. I have written quite a few pieces with Golden Earring, Danny Vera and Green Day in my ears. If I can't get started, or am I too distracted? Then I put on my happy list with a lot of variation in style.

In consultation with like-minded people
A completely different setting that also works well for me: in consultation with two to three people who are on the same frequency. Together you know more than one and by associating and building on each other's ideas, you can sometimes achieve a lot in an hour.

Circumstance-wise, it works when I don't have a lot of small to-do's, but rather have time blocked in my agenda. I also go like a rocket when I have a tight deadline, but I don't like the stress that causes. That's why I try to avoid that.

Consciously seek out the circumstances that work for you.

Make a routine of your flow
Once you know what helps you get into the flow, you can create it artificially. Allen advises to make it a routine. Consciously seek out the circumstances that work for you. The more you practice it, the easier it becomes to achieve. And this has the advantage that you get more motivation from yourself, are more productive and are more empowered in your work.
