Lenis Toro has an impressive CV. With 25 years of experience, she has worked in many sectors such as telecommunications, digital and print media and, above all, aviation, becoming president of several companies . She has recently decided to take a turn in her career and also take our Diploma in Personal Branding and Brand Management . In the following interview, she will explain her career and what it means to hold a senior position as a woman in her native Venezuela.
After so many years working in the airline industry, what prompted you to make such a drastic change in your career?
Personally, I don't think it was such a dizzying turn, but rather the return of the prodigal son. My career was initially always in marketing and basically because of those achievements in the commercial area and leading a complete department where about 600 people reported to me at the airline level, I achieved that promotion to lead one of the companies.
So you can no longer have just a commercial vision. However, what I managed to do is to incorporate my alma mater: marketing, into what is standard, such as revenue, profitability and safety in aviation.
So there was an additional concern for customers, for the brand, for their experience, for what they felt and for their opinion, and obviously within an airline all of that is linked. Each satisfied passenger is an additional repurchase process because they recommend the brand. So what we did was that this knowledge that already existed at the marketing level permeated the corporate structure to achieve positioning that sense of respect for the customer.
Throughout your career you will have had to work in front of the public on many occasions. Why did you decide to take our Personal Branding and Brand Management course right now?
Yes, I have certainly been involved in this throughout my entire professional career, because it is part of what you do when you are the commercial manager, vice president or president of an organization. You have a higher level of visibility and exposure, for better or for worse. What happens is that now, at the marketing level, structure is being given to many other things that perhaps we did not take into account before, and that has to do with personal branding .
Personally, I think that the diploma has helped me to focus more on myself than on brands. Initially, when I took it, the decision was to help others and it continues to be to help others because that way one feels a significant level of satisfaction, but the main focus was on managing commercial brands and not personal ones. The great achievement of the diploma was that throughout its entire process, an extraordinary process, it helped me to see myself as a brand.
What surprised you the most about the course? Have you ever had one of those moments where you think, “I wish I had known this before”? Can you give us an example?
What surprised me most about the diploma was the ability to involve oneself . Anyone who is serious about taking a diploma, especially this diploma in particular, and I emphasize this because I have taken other diplomas. I have a diploma in digital marketing, in social media management, in marketing and business and I have done other types of studies, but this diploma touched a nerve with me because I never considered myself a brand and here they show you how each one is a brand in itself.
