The Role of Industrial Design in the Product Development Process

Post by mimakte »

Manufacturers in the post-Soviet space traditionally paid attention to design last, first developing a working technology and not focusing on ergonomics and style. But today, companies are betting on appearance and convenience to stand out in such a competitive market.

Returning to domestic companies that have realized the role of industrial design, it can be noted that their in-house designers participated in the process at the last stage of production. But in most cases, this approach gives a bad result, so it is very important to choose a conscious method for using the design of new devices.

Literally everything depends on the product functions. Symbolically, it is absolutely wrong to classify the design layout as "user-focused" and "technology-focused". If in the first case the main benefit from using the product is associated, for example, with the functionality of the interface or with external aesthetic appeal, then in the second case the technologies are considered a priority, i.e. the ability of the product to perform a specific technological task. Let's consider everything in order.

User-centric product
Here, the appearance dominates, which panama email list differs from similar products of competitors. The product itself can be technically complex, its interaction with the user is put in the first place. An example can be consumer electronics, which have an attractive shell.

User-centric product

The designer can solve a number of issues already at the early stages of production:

Identify user needs, conduct marketing research based on design, etc.

Develop a general concept for the device together with engineers.

Define the product interface. For example, justify the sufficiency of two buttons instead of five, as the engineers suggested.

Example. Portable dosimeter-radiometer "DO-RA" from JSC "Eurasia Intersoft". The sensor is very small and works by connecting to smartphones. As a result, measurements are displayed in applications for Android or iOS. The designers changed the use of the sensor so much that they created a completely new product, which acquired a new target audience. Now "DO-RA" claims the title of the smallest universal dosimeter in the world.
