Apple puts the final nail in the coffin of one of its most iconic products: the iPod

When Steve Jobs introduced the first iPod to the public in October 2001 , half the world was stunned by the amazing storage capacity of that tiny and revolutionary gadget from the Apple company . That iPod had space for 1,000 songs (quite a milestone at the time). And with a weight of just 185 grams (perfect for keeping in your pocket), the device was equipped with a battery that lasted 10 hours.

The iPod ended up becoming a cult object (spurred on in large part by its iconic advertisements of silhouettes on coloured backgrounds). Apple has decided to stop manufacturing the iPod touch , the only model that was still "alive" in this legendary range of music playback devices. The company with the apple logo will continue, however, to market the last available units of the iPod touch while stocks last.


With the iPod touch's announced death, many will probably buy it before it sells out, to hoard it for a few years and then sell it at a golden price to Apple collectors.

The spirit of the iPod lives on, according to Apple
There is no need to speculate as to the reasons for the iPod's demise. Times have simply changed and the ubiquitous iPhone has replaced the iPod as a music listening device.

"The music will still play, but it will play on other devices such as the iPhone, iPad or Mac that have the Apple Music service integrated , so the iPod has become obsolete," explains Apple.

“Music has always been at the heart of what Apple is all about, and by bringing it to hundreds of millions of people through iPod, we’ve impacted the music industry and redefined the way music is discovered, listened to and shared ,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Marketing. “The spirit of iPod lives on today. We’ve built incredible music experiences into all of our products, from iPhone to Apple Watch, HomePod mini, Mac, iPad and Apple TV.”
