Achieving an equal future in industry is everyone's job. We have contacted some of the female industrialists in our country to find out what they think we should do.
These are just a few and we hope that if you know someone, we can include them in the list. We want to create role models for future generations, both men and women, giving visibility to diversity in the industry.
This year, to commemorate Women's Day, Branding Industrial wanted to give a voice and put a face to female executives in the industrial sector. Through a campaign that will last all year, with the hashtag MujeresIndustriales , great professionals and leaders from different sectors give us a personal reflection on what we should do today to welcome more women in the future.
The industry is a sector that has traditionally been hostile to the presence of women, where stereotypes and gender roles from the past still persist. In Spain, only 24.6% of women worked in the industry in 2018, according to data from the Generalitat de Catalunya. One of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 emphasizes the need to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women in the world of work.
The low female presence in industry, and especially in management positions, is a problem that is perceived from education. Without wanting to generalise and from our experience, women who end up being CEOs are usually owners of the company. Women grow up from a young age with very few female role models. And without role models there are no vocations, as Núria Salán, president of the Catalan Society of Technology and professor at the UPC, says. We have to motivate all girls through inclusive and equal education that does not distinguish professions based on gender.
It is true that part of this is believing in ourselves and accepting that we are fully capable of leading in the industry, but believing in ourselves is not enough. In order to achieve this goal, we have to go one step further. We need collaboration from governments and companies that encourage the creation of public policies and measures that promote gender diversity. In addition, we need to increase educational and professional training opportunities in science, engineering, technology and mathematics. Only in this way will we ensure that everyone shares the world in the same way: without restrictions.
21st century feminism does not mean putting a different colour filter on the world. The point is to start seeing it without colours, and to eliminate the list of antarctica consumer email barriers so that everyone can choose freely. One of the important steps is the wage gap. For the same task, the salary is worse. Women would have to earn 28.6 percent more to equal the salary of men, taking into account the data from the AEAT. According to the World Economic Forum (2017), it will take more than a century to eliminate this gap.
The labour inequality that still exists in society is a reality and although we are moving towards an equal future, there is still a long way to go.
But this task should not be just for women. We need the commitment of our colleagues when it comes to identifying patterns and biases. Because more or less everyone has daughters, sisters, nieces or friends. And it is not a question of going out to demonstrate one day, it is a daily job, a path that our mothers paved so that we could have a full voice today. And although it may seem that we do, it is not so. We only hope that women in the 21st century do not have to celebrate Women's Day, it will mean a new model of society.
We know that there are many of you and we need role models. Don't hesitate to contact us, we are eager to meet you all.
