Making social networks smaller and private is a trend that is not new, but seems to be gaining traction. In this video I discuss Facebook privacy and the rise of small-scale private networks.

We don’t want the whole world to see our family photos, so we set our Facebook profiles to private. We’re becoming more aware of privacy settings and are less likely to unfriend people. However, Facebook doesn’t offer all the privacy options and convenience we want, so other tools are emerging that do or do a better job.

I recently went to South by Southwest, one of the largest internet and technology events in the world – and saw this trend there too. At one of the booths I found Light.ws . It allows you to share videos and photos privately with your closest friends and family. It’s like Dropbox for Facebook. You don’t have to share anything publicly, it’s really about sharing content between you and the people you care about. In addition, with Light.ws you can also give your children a life file with all your videos and photos from your entire life.

Between: Private network for you and your partner
Another example: Between , an app that is incredibly popular in Asia and now also more in America. Between is a network for just you and your partner. Share photos, memos and messages ukraine phone datacompletely privately. Of course you can already text and email privately, but it is not always easy to find certain photos or messages. Between organizes all messages, notes and photos on a private timeline, which is only visible to the two of you.

The popularity of this app shows where we're headed: a way to privately share beautiful memories with people we really care about – and keep it to a smaller circle.
