Google Images is nothing more than the search engine section where users search for images. What few people may know is that there are several ways to search for them in more specific ways. After all, who has never searched for a photo and not been able to find anything they liked?

Although it is a very common feature today, it took about three years after Google was created for the platform to launch the service. Until then, image searches were done in a conventional way, with the user hoping to find something related to their search.

How Google Images came about
The story behind the creation of the service is somewhat unusual. In 2000, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez appeared at the Grammys wearing a very different Versace dress, which led to a massive search for it on the internet.

Interestingly, this occasion was decisive for the platform to launch its image search service. In 2001, it was officially implemented on the search engine and to this day we can see Lopez's famous dress on it.

How Google Image Works
Basically, searching for an image on Google is very simple. Just go loan database to the “Image” page, type what you want, for example “soccer ball” and there you have it, thousands of results for the term will appear.

However, this is a very generic way of searching, as there are more efficient ways to make your search more effective. Below, we have listed some tips to help you find the right image.

1 – Search by URL
Google Images allows users to search via the image URL. So, you just need to copy the photo link by right-clicking on it and selecting “Copy image address”. Then, just paste it into the platform.

2 – Upload content
You can also upload an image that is already saved on your computer, if you want to find other versions and sizes. Click on “Upload an image” and then “Select file”. All you need to do is find the photo on your computer and open it. Dozens of identical or similar options will be loaded onto the page.

3 – Search for images by predominant color
Are you looking for images in specific tones? Then relax, because Google also allows this type of search. In fact, it offers 12 colors, in addition to black and white or transparent background options.

To do this, go to the top bar and select “Search Tools”. Then click on “Color” and select one of the options. The results will load on the search page.

4 – Search by file type
In the “type” option, the user can search for the image by file format, that is, they can filter by PNG, JPG, GIF, Clip Art, Animation and even choose to emphasize Face and Linear Drawing.

5 – Search by sizes
Another mechanism provided by Google in image search is size. You can search for images of all sizes or filter the search according to the dimension you want.

The user can filter the search by “Large”, “Medium”, “Icon” and “Larger than” for patterns from 400 x 300 pixels to 9600 x 7200. To complete, it is still possible to select a specific size, with the item “Exactly”. Just enter the width and height measurements (px) and search.

6 – Image search by time period
This is a very interesting search engine for historical, documentary, informative, school and many other projects. To access this option, just go to “Search Tool” and choose “Time”.

A tab will open with options for “in the last 24 hours”, “in the last week” or “Custom range”, in which you must add the exact date and month for the start and end of the search.

7 – Search for copyright-free images
When searching for images on Google in a generic way, most of the images that appear in the results are copyrighted, so reproducing them without due credit to the author may cause problems.

However, there is the option of free authorship search. Simply type the key term in the Google Images search and select the “Search Tools” option in the resource bar.

Then, under “Usage Rights” there will be several options in this regard, such as “Marked for reuse with modification”, “Marked for reuse”, “Marked for non-commercial reuse with modifications” and “Marked for non-commercial reuse”. So, choose the one that fits your needs.

8 – Wallpaper
If you like to change the background image on your computer frequently, then this mechanism is a great help, as it directs the search for the correct screen resolution.

Type your keyword into Google Images and then click on “Search Tools.” Click on the “More Tools” option and select “Show size.” You’ll notice that the image sizes will be displayed in a bar at the bottom of each thumbnail.

For those who don't have time to waste, you can search with “Keyword + wallpaper” and get faster results. Then just click on the options with compatible sizes.

9 – Enable or disable the SafeSearch function
If your search is at risk of showing inappropriate content, you can activate a platform security filter called SafeSearch. By activating this function, your search will be free from unwanted results.

To activate it, click on the “SafeSearch” button, located at the top right of the screen. Then, check the “Filter Explicit Results” option. The page will be updated with the new thumbnails in the default settings. To deactivate it, simply repeat the procedure and uncheck the feature.

10 – Restore the search filter
After activating one or more of the search filters mentioned above, it is also possible to restore the default search without deactivating them one by one. Just click on the “Clear” item, located at the end of the toolbar. The page will be refreshed with the “default” search thumbnails, as before starting the process.
