World Habitat Day is celebrated on Monday, October 5, and World Cities Day is commemorated on the 31st of the same month .

In 2012, UN Habitat launched the World Public Space Programme . Using an assessment tool, the programme aims to ensure that five basic principles of quality public space are met: safety, inclusion, connectivity, accessibility and sustainability. This information is reflected in a guide published by the organisation.

“Bridging the gap between needs and design, this guide relies on the active participation of community members, technical experts, and local authorities in each of the activities listed. While it is often considered costly and time-consuming for a city to send personnel to conduct surveys, the Assessment offers a variety of activities that are affordable and cost-effective,” says the Plataforma Arquitectura website .

This evaluation process includes a first phase of gathering information on demographics, history, context, infrastructure and social dynamics, among other factors. In a second phase, an exhaustive investigation is carried out , in which citizen participation plays an important role.

The data obtained are analyzed in a third phase , in order to expose the main problems linked to public spaces and traffic. In the last part of the evaluation, it is “ proposed to evaluate the public space after implementation to understand its impact on the neighborhood . It is important to revisit the site one year after construction and evaluate whether the public space met its final goals and objectives,” says the aforementioned website.

FUNIBER sponsors numerous university programs focused on offering professionals all the information related to the latest developments in urban development, as well as concerns about achieving sustainability in this sector. One of the courses offered is the Master's Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning Projects .
